Overview

Welcome to Startup Weekend! We are super excited to have this event come back to LA. It is a unique community builder and a great chance to build ideas that otherwise might not get funded.

Please post questions and needs on our google group.

This event is made possible by Robert Richman and Jerome Chang of Blankspaces. We also thank our volunteers: Amanda Abelove, Ty White, and Damon Young.

Our Startup Weekend coordinators are Clayton Stobbs and Jeremy Tanner.

Diets and special needs: Do you have specific diet (vegetarian/allergies) that you must stick to? Please email Amanda before the event to see if we can accommodate you. We are pretty well fixed to one caterer, but options are available.

Crashing

Blankspaces is kind enough to stay open for this event. There will be an RnR room set aside, but in general people tend to stay up late and can be a little noisy. If you are not local to Mid-Wilshire LA and are not the late-night type, please make arrangements at one of the motels/hotels nearby.

Keeping in Touch After the Weekend

Carpooling and Parking

Blankspaces is generously hosting Startup Weekend over a holiday weekend. There are a lot of bars and great venues in the area. This also means parking will be a challenge.

BlankSpaces Lot

The BlankSpaces lot is reserved for carpools. 5 go to the event organizers so that we can run out and get stuff if we need to. The remaining 13 spaces go to people who carpool. You must have 3 people in your car at checkin on Friday night to get a carpool pass. You must have one of our placards to park in the lot or you may get towed.

Loading Zone

There is a loading zone in front of BlankSpaces. You are welcome to park there while you run in and check in. This is also the loading zone the caterer will use so please be considerate!

Street Parking

There are a lot of apartment buildings and bars in the area… which means that while there is a lot of street parking, it may be hard to find. Read all street signs carefully before parking… the rules change in the middle of the blocks, and there may be more than one set of signs. Here are some places to look for overnight parking:

  • Along 6th (N of Wilshire) between La Brea and Fairfax
  • Along 9th (S of Wilshire) west of La Brea
  • Along Highland, south of Wilshire

Personal Safety

This is a good neighborhood in premium real estate. It is still an urban environment and bars generally attract the wrong sort who watch for people stumbling home… especially on a party weekend. Startup Weekend is a 54 hour event and people come and go at all hours. Please be careful and mindful of your personal safety. It is easy enough to ask someone to walk you to your car.

Even if you are a guy, take a buddy. You may not be as successful as a certain Legend at getting a mugger to just take cash and give you back your driver’s license. (We had no idea you could do that!)
